During April this year I worked with Crow House Projects which are an Aberdeen based film production company. Their goal is to Showcase the film-making skills and talent that are present in Aberdeen. Their latest work is a short horror film entitled 'Roast in Peace'.
My role in the production of ‘Roast in Peace’ was as a BTS (behind the scenes) photographer.
I worked in conjunction with a team of other photographers who were tasked with creating a photographic documentation of the film shoot.
Due to other commitments I was only available on the last two days of the five days of filming. Thankfully the other BTS photographers were able to cover the first three days.
Though I was only there for a limited amount of time I found it to be an invaluable experience; this was the first time I had photographed on an actual film set.
I joined up with the cast, crew and the other photographers on the fourth day of filming and began to familiarise myself to what was going on. The production took up two large rooms and a few smaller ones all of which were located on the same floor in the Aberdeen Town Hall. The first of the large rooms was used as a sort of base for storing filming equipment and for makeup to be applied. The second large room was the actual location for the film set.
As a BTS photographer I decided that I would try and capture a flavour of what it is like on a film set. I wanted my photographs to be candid and natural, photographing the cast and crew as they got on with the task of making a film. I also wanted to capture images of the different equipment set up and the ways in which it is operated.
I think one of the biggest challenges I faced in photographing at this location was the lack of natural light (after all it was a horror film that was being made). Shooting in such low light meant that I had to be careful that my shutter speed was not too low which could cause motion blur if people were moving around quickly as I photographed them.
By the end of the final two days of the shoot everyone involved were in a buoyant mood as they had been part of something very special. I was also very pleased that I had been there to witness it with my camera.
